Using Email Forwarding and Autoresponders
Email forwarding and autoresponders are features of your email provider, not your domain registrar. NG Domain doesn't host email, but your domain's DNS records decide which provider receives mail for your addresses. This guide explains how the two fit together.
Email Forwarding
Forwarding automatically sends mail for one address (for example [email protected]) on to another (for example [email protected]).
Why use it:
- One inbox: read mail for several addresses in one place.
- Role addresses: create addresses like
sales@orsupport@that reach the right person. - A professional address without a full mailbox: use your own domain while keeping your current inbox.
How to set it up:
- If you already use an email provider such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Zoho Mail, set up forwarding or aliases in that provider's settings. Their help pages have the exact steps.
- If you only need forwarding, a forwarding service can receive mail for your domain and pass it on to your existing inbox. Sign up, then add the MX (and any TXT) records it gives you in your NG Domain dashboard.
Only one provider can receive mail for a domain at a time, so remove old MX records when you switch.
Autoresponders
Autoresponders send a pre-written reply to anyone who emails a particular address.
Common uses:
- Out-of-office replies: let people know you're away and when you'll be back.
- Acknowledgements: confirm you've received a message and say when to expect a reply.
- Basic information: answer frequently asked questions automatically.
Autoresponders live in your email provider's settings, often under "vacation responder" or "automatic replies". Set a start and end date so they don't keep running after you're back.
