Choosing .ng Extensions

Choosing the Right .ng Extension

Nigeria's country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) is .ng. Within this, there are several second-level domains (SLDs) that help categorise your website and clearly indicate its purpose or target audience within Nigeria. Choosing the correct .ng extension is important for branding and local relevance.

Here's a breakdown of common .ng extensions and their intended uses:

• .ng (Primary/Premium):

  • Use: This is the top-level Nigerian domain. It's often seen as premium and can be used for any purpose by businesses, organisations, or individuals wanting a strong Nigerian identity.
  • Consideration: Typically more expensive than other second-level .ng domains.

• .com.ng:

  • Use: The most popular choice for commercial entities, businesses, and online stores operating in or targeting Nigeria. Equivalent to .com but with a specific Nigerian focus.
  • Consideration: Highly recommended for most businesses.

• .org.ng:

  • Use: Intended for non-profit organisations, charities, NGOs, and community-based groups in Nigeria.
  • Consideration: Helps signal your organisation's non-commercial status.

• .edu.ng:

  • Use: Restricted to degree-awarding tertiary institutions in Nigeria (universities, polytechnics, colleges of education).
  • Consideration: Requires institutional verification. NG Domain often facilitates free registration for eligible institutions.

• .gov.ng:

  • Use: Strictly for entities of the Federal, State, and Local Governments of Nigeria.
  • Consideration: Requires official authorisation and verification.

• .sch.ng:

  • Use: For primary and secondary schools in Nigeria.
  • Consideration: A great way for schools to establish an online presence. NG Domain often facilitates free registration for eligible schools.

• .net.ng:

  • Use: Primarily for network providers, ISPs, and technology infrastructure companies in Nigeria.
  • Consideration: If your business is in the IT networking space.

• .name.ng:

  • Use: Designed for individuals who want a personal domain name.
  • Consideration: Good for personal branding, portfolios, or family websites.

• .i.ng:

  • Use: A very short and versatile option, can be used creatively for individuals or innovative projects (e.g., "cod.i.ng", "learn.i.ng").
  • Consideration: Can be quite memorable and impactful.

Tips for Choosing:

1. Reflect Your Purpose: Pick an extension that best matches your website's content or your organisation's type.
2. Target Audience: .ng extensions signal a focus on the Nigerian audience.
3. Availability: Check if your desired name is available with your preferred .ng extension.
4. Budget: Consider the price differences between the primary .ng and various second-level domains.

NG Domain can help you navigate these options and secure the perfect .ng domain for your needs.
